Plant dismantling and shipment
The Rock Creek Mine is located along the west coast of Alaska on the Seward Peninsula, 6 miles north of Nome. Nome, Alaska is a coastal town of approximately 3,500 people, 500 miles northwest of Anchorage on the southern Seward Peninsula coast on the Norton Sound of the Bering Sea.
Working in this harsh and remote subarctic climate, where the temperature can drop below -50 degrees centigrade posed some logistical challenges. The project time frame was limited to seven months from March to September in any given year. It is in this time frame that the seas are not frozen. Because of limited access to the site – no main roads or railways service this area – the only way to retrieve the shipment was by ship via Nome’s port.
